'Nothing could ever prepare me for what I have heard'

In September 2018, Aileen Scott travelled from her home in Glasgow to Blackpool, to take a holiday with her son Brian.

Aileen had been transferred to her home city and was still recovering from the stroke, but back in Blackpool, an investigation was underway about the abuse of vulnerable patients on the ward.A student nurse who had been working with Catherine Hudson had raised concerns over the way drugs were handled and administered on the ward - and that vulnerable patients were being given dangerous sedatives without a prescription.

Aileen had never been prescribed the drug, and there was no record of it on her drugs chart. And yet it was in her blood. On November 8, Hudson was suspended from duty on the Stroke Unit. The brassy, larger than life character, said she had a 'strange' sense of humour which she used to ease the pressure of working on the ward. She denied any wrongdoing.

The patient they were referring to was Sheila Clarke, a rehabilitation patient who was on the ward in 2017. Hudson bragged to one colleague she had "sedated her to within an inch of her life".Then there was the pharmaceutical regime. In September and October 2018, 1,100 zopiclone tablets were dispensed from the hospital pharmacy for use in the stroke unit, the jury was told.

Following a trial, Hudson was found guilty of three counts of ill treatment, relating to two patients, and one count of conspiracy to ill treat and Wilmot found guilty of conspiracy to ill treat and encouraging Hudson to sedate a patient. Det Ch Insp Jill Johnston, of Lancashire Police, said: “Hudson and Wilmot ill treated the very people who they were supposed to care for. This was a complete abuse of their position of trust – trust that the victims and their families had, expecting them to be looked after and made to feel safe. The reality was sadly quite the opposite.
