Built in the 20s and 30s with the help of British master craftsmen, 13 forgotten carriages from the iconic service were discovered in a Polish railway siding,
before offering its first services in 2025. The renovation of the suite, which occupies the entirety of one of the 17 carriages on the refurbished train and includes a separate bathroom as well as Lalique glass panels and a gas fireplace, has been supervised by French architect Maxime d’Angeac, a specialist in ultra-high-end projects. Describing the carriage, Mr D’Angeac said: “It is a suite where travellers can experience history, extreme luxury and ultimate comfort all at once.
Indeed, Accor has made a considerable bet on the Orient Express brand by planning to open a series of five-star hotels carrying the same name in locations from Venice and Rome to the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh. It is understood the renovation work has included the refurbishment of wooden marquetry panels supplied nearly a century ago for the Orient Express by two British companies, Essex-based Dunn & Son and Morrison & Nelson, which specialised in Art Deco work.
Inevitably, perhaps, such luxury will not come cheap. The company this month opened its waiting list for tickets for the first journeys by the service to Italy, with prices starting at £1,750 per person per night – meaning an average £7,000 bill for a two-night journey between Venice, Rome and the Italian Riviera.
