Chicago Sky coach James Wade has been living in Europe during his offseasons. A warm reprieve from Chicago winters, it also allows Wade to scout the many women’s basketball players abroad during those months, MikeVorkunov writes. No Offseason:

head coach and general manager James Wade sets off to the south of France for his home in Montpellier. He has been living in Europe during his offseasons since the turn of the century, around the same time he played professionally in France. Now, it is routine, and he is joined by his wife, Edwige Lawson-Wade, a French former WNBA player.

James Wade was in his home last offseason when Lawson-Wade told him about a player she had watched and thought could help the Sky. Lawson-Wade consults for the Sky, her husband said, and is a crucial voice for him, so Wade listened. Then, Lawson-Wade told him that Gardner’s team, Uni Girona, was playing that night in a nearby city, accessible to Wade because his French home is close enough to both the Spanish and Italian borders.

The story is also a look into the various ways that WNBA teams use the offseason to keep track of players abroad and to try to find news ones. Two top decision-makers spoke withto discuss how they scout overseas players and how they use those off-months to seek out talent. If not for that opportunity to see Gardner in person, Wade is unsure if he would have signed her and then kept her on the Sky roster without seeing her in camp. “I don’t know,” he said. “You see so much on film, but you trust your eyes when you see it even more.”Wade is a constant presence in Europe during the offseason, picking spots to come back to the United States to watch college basketball in the winter and March as well. He has come to see the same faces over and over again.

“It was two years of not really being able to go,” Thibault said. “You couldn’t travel in certain countries or was difficult. Fans weren’t allowed in games in a lot of places for a while. Just the fact that nobody really wanted to go and take a chance of being sick. That was a factor. I think that’s part of it. Obviously, the whole situation in Russia has changed things.
