How droughts across Europe are affecting homes, industries, energy and even wine ➡️ Nearly half of EU countries are under a drought warning, as prolonged extreme heat and little rainfall dry up rivers and kill crops

the second of three drought categories, while about 15 per cent are under “alert”, the most severe category.

French energy giant EDF said it had to temporarily cut power production at two of its nuclear plants which use river water to cool reactors, adding that at least one more plant could be affected in the coming days, due to high temperatures in the Rhone river. Regulations typically require nuclear production to be limited during times of high heat to prevent the hot water re-entering rivers, due to the dangers to wildlife. However, French nuclear availability has been at its lowest in at least four years this summer and nearly half of the country’s reactors are offline because of corrosion problems and maintenance.

She added that the situation could get worse as weather forecasts suggest the heat could continue for the next two weeks. At least a third of the stock of clams raised in the Po Delta have died off, while plants along the river banks have wilted due to the salty waters.“It is evident that there is an entire system with an ecology that will have permanent problems,” said Giancarlo Mantovani, director of Po River Basin Authority.

In San Casciano in Val di Pesa, near Florence, olive trees struggle to produce enough fruit in parched soil. A short distance away in Castellina in Chianti, one of the most famous regions for wine production, grapes are ripening early due to the prolonged extreme heat.
