. Rachel Whysall, Forest’s player liaison officer, has been in regular touch with Ian’s sons and Jo Baxter, the family liaison officer for Nottinghamshire Police.
He was, of course, more than just a Forest fan. Some of the more endearing stories relate to his work in Nottingham schools and how, having developed a love for angling, he would pay out of his own pocket to take some of the more challenging pupils on weekend fishing trips. There was also no doubt, though, that Forest was his first love. As a younger man, Ian stood on the terraces of the Trent End and travelled to all sorts of far-flung places. “He was like my sons are now,” says Darren. “Every single match, home and away, no matter where it was, he’d be there.”
Ian had one of Stuart Pearce’s England shirts framed in his “man cave” at home, paying homage to his favourite player. There was one of Steve Stone, another of the team’sIan Coates’ sons during a vigil in Old Market Square
