Removing the climate guilt from flying could be a step closer after Google and American Airlines proved that artificial intelligence could be used to reduce theThe scientists behind the programme hope to remove a fifth or more of that impact within five years,Google’s software was used by American Airlines pilots on 70 test flights to direct them when to change altitude and avoid the creation of contrails, a significant source of global warming.
While the carbon dioxide emissions from jetliners are well known and extremely difficult to reduce, between a third and two-thirds of theSome is caused by nitrogen dioxide, but a major chunk is due to the effects of contrails, the vapour clouds created by jet engines in certain conditions. Because they are short lived, eliminating contrails could contribute immediately to cutting global warming.
Not all scientists are enthused by the findings, with some pointing to a large number of unknowns around contrail research.
