A new Netflix documentary, Running With The Devil: The Wild World Of John McAfee, tracks the late Silicon Valley entrepreneur's downfall
editor-in-chief Rocco Castoro and photographer/videographer Robert King, whose talking heads make up a large part of the documentary – agreed.
Castoro and King escaped to Guatemala with McAfee, but got caught up in trouble when they entered the country without their passports being stamped, meaning they had entered illegally. McAfee is shown being extremely jumpy and agitated, making the whole group leave hotels within seconds when he reveals he’s had a “tip off” that the authorities were on his tail.
Once in Guatemala, it turned out Sam’s uncle was not only a lawyer, but worked for the president of the country, so McAfee immediately hired him to take on his case, as he claimed the Belizan authorities were politically persecuting him. Trying to take a leaf from Julian Assange’s playbook, he tried to claim asylum from Guatemala, but they weren’t having it.
However, McAfee had a plan: he faked a heart attack. While he was rushed to hospital and news reports showed him to be at death’s door,reported at the time that he said he did this “to buy time for his attorney to file a series of appeals that ultimately prevented his deportation to Belize, hastening the government's decision to send him back to the United States.
