It’s easy to become a K-pop stan – multi or otherwise – because fans of the genre are not merely incidental. K-pop and its fans are part of an ecosystem, and the relationship is baked into the culture. Photo cards, meet-and-greets and copiable choreography have long been part of the K-pop world – but K-pop artists also interact with their fans on a more microcosmic level.
Appealing to the TikTok market is significant because it also demonstrates that the industry is internationally minded: in South Korea, YouTube shorts is the more popular video platform. While it may also indicate a lean towards young people, too, K-pop fandom is not reserved for the young.and now CEO of the charity Children With Cancer UK, started getting into K-pop a couple of years ago, after her teenage daughter had been into it for years.
Although the majority of UK K-pop fandom still happens on social media – Robin tells me that even now, with the society, 70 per cent of their interaction with other fans is online – in-person events are becoming more common post-pandemic.
