How many countries in the Commonwealth and which will compete at Birmingham 2022?
Athletes from a whole host of nations will be welcomed to Birmingham this week as the city hosts the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games. The 12-day sporting event kicks off with the opening ceremony on Thursday, July 28, with events taking place across the West Midlands in the following days.
This year's games will see a total of 280 medal events takes place across 20 different sports. The Birmingham games will also boast the largest para-sport programme seen before, with eight sports on offer. What is the Commonwealth and how many countries are in it? The Commonwealth is a political association which has a total of 56 member states. The vast majority are former territories of the British Empire.
