The Warriors' margin for error is slimmer than it once was. In Game 3, it might’ve been a single blown play that doomed Golden State. The Warriors can climb out of this hole, writes timkawakami. But they’re making it harder and harder for themselves.
“We understand the things we have to do in terms of keeping them off the free-throw line, whether it’s calls that we agree with or not, which most we didn’t tonight,” Curry said. “But that’s not the sole reason you lose. It’s just a mindfulness on how we’re trying to create good looks, being tough and physical on the defensive end of the floor without fouling to keep the pace where we want it to and connect the game. It’s pretty simple, it’s just a matter of doing it.
“Especially on the road and the way they try to defend us, when the game stops, it’s not in our favor,” Curry said. “So we just got to understand momentum in a game, like two different styles of play, it all matters.”“It’s obviously my fault because I threw the pass,” Curry said. “But it’s one of those plays where you’re making a read for somebody else. It’s like a cardinal sin as a point guard — making a read when you’re not on the same page.
The Warriors’ leaders know they’ve said these things after more than a few recent losses. They’ve felt this way, they’ve pointed out their mistakes and they’ve said they’ll be better next game. They’ve been mostly right, too, especially in the momentous hours between the dreadful Game 6 loss to the Kings and then Game 7. Curry referred to all of that Saturday, and you could tell he also understood that he’s been saying these things a lot.
But that was another time. That was when they were younger and deeper and didn’t fall behind in early-round playoff series. The Warriors can find their way out of this one, just like they did in the last one, but they’re making it harder and harder for themselves. They can feel it.
