“Instead of taking working from home as an opportunity to free myself from my attachment to make-up, I continued to apply it every morning – only to remove it all once my daily 20-minute Zoom catch-up was over.”
Before March 2020, I wore make-up every single day. If I left the house I’d be wearing a full face, or at the very least, lashings of concealer to cover the stubborn hyperpigmentation marks that never fail to appear on my skin after a breakout.
As a beauty editor, I felt like a fraud having problematic skin. With every spot and mark that appeared on my face, I found myself more dependent on make-up to feel presentable enough to tell the world what I write and talk about for a living. I would come home after a long day of wearing make-up, and find myself disliking what I saw once I double cleansed it all away. I yearned to be like my colleagues, who came into the office confident with their concealer-free and mascara-less eyes.
