Millions of women have been sharing data on their menstrual cycles, sex lives and the texture of their cervix's on period tracker apps but how safe is this highly sensitive information on the Internet?
Under the UK Abortion Act 1967,
In 2019, PI sent five period-tracking apps a “data subject access requests”, similar to a Freedom of Information request, which under data protection law grants citizens the right to ask public and private companies for their own data. The responses were telling. So what should we do? The onus, Pirolot de Corbin believes, should be strictly on the companies “to provide a safe option for users”. This, she says, should include transparency as to who data is being shared with and for what purposes, as well as minimising data held, by storing it on local devices, not with the company itself.
