USA Gymnastics typically doesn’t sell tickets to the podium training sessions, and when they do, they never sell 500 of them. They did last Friday. The reason? Simone Biles. Supported by MichelobULTRA:
The reaction to Biles’ decision to withdraw from the team final in Tokyo was somehow mixed. Some praised her for prioritizing her health and safety, while others criticized her for bailing on her team when they needed her most. An athlete caring for her mental health was actually a topic up for debate on sports programming.
Her training mates at World Champions Centre in the Houston area kept Biles’ regular presence in the gym mainly to themselves, because even they weren’t sure if or when she would come back to competition. Throughout her career, Biles has always made the hard choices. She came out publicly as a survivor of Larry Nassar, and then became a vocal critic of USA Gymnastics. She removed herself from the biggest competition with the highest stakes when her mind and body weren’t working together. But this decision to go for a third Olympics and return to competitive gymnastics wasn’t a hard one, because she felt like she never really had to make it at all.
Since Tokyo, Biles has learned to prioritize her mental health and to spend significant time in therapy, taking care of her mind as much as she does her body. “I’m just more nervous when I do gymnastics,” Biles told reporters after the team final in Tokyo. “I feel like I’m also not having as much fun. And I know this Olympic Games, I wanted it to be for myself. I’m still doing it for other people.”“Going into it, I really was doing it for me,” she said. “And then there were all those outside noises. And then everybody telling me, like, you’re a gold-medal token. And that’s from our inside team. That was really tough.
