With the next general election on the horizon, the local elections were seen by many as a key test for how each party would fare when the nation went to the polls.
Sir Keir Starmer, meanwhile, said that Labour is now “on course for a Labour majority at the next general election.”The Conservatives have only had one major victory so far in the local elections – they achieved a majority oncouncil, which was previously in no overall control. The party won four seats, taken mainly from independent candidates, but weren’t able to see off the Lib Dems who gained three seats.council amid fears Labour could take their majority.
Labour fell one short of taking the council, gaining six seats in total, while the Conservatives lost two seats, and independent candidates lost four. While not a victory for Labour, it is still a lost opportunity for the Conservatives.where the Conservatives were only three seats short of overall control. Labour needed 10 seats to gain a majority, but only gained five, while the Conservatives lost 8 seats. The Green Party also did well there, gaining five seats.
