Once an NFL team has its QB, what do the pieces around that player need to look like? In Part III of our 'How to run an NFL franchise' series, nickbaumgardner and DianteLeeFB round out their wish lists on offense.

Quarterback is No. 1 on the positional value chart. Briefly rank the rest of the offensive positions in order of importance.Offensive tackle is next in importance, for obvious reasons — we need to keep our quarterback upright as long as we can. I think I diverge from popular opinion here, though, because then it’s the interior offensive line.

It’s wide receiver after that, and I’m less interested in a star than I am in spreading touches. Slot receiver, tight end and running back are effectively tied for me, because they unlock offensive versatility and multiplicity. Fullback, to the extent that your offense even needs one, would bring up the rear. After QB, I’d rank the offensive positions: OT, WR, TE, interior OL, RB, slot WR. The first two felt like no-brainers.

I’m going to fight for TE at No. 3, and many will disagree, but I’ve long believed this is one of the most valuable spots on the field … if you get it right. My argument for having running back valued higher than slot would be rooted in my preference that backs be able to catch passes and, ideally, run more than the typical RB route tree.
