Russia has constructed at least 13 new military airbases in the Arctic, some of them on the site of previous bases from the Soviet era, writes military expert JUSTIN BRONK.

These routes can cut as much as 30 per cent off shipping times compared to traditional routes, and so offer tempting commercial opportunities.
