If you are a woman aged between 18 and 30 you have probably seen adverts encouraging you to take the “opportunity of a lifetime” This will not be an advert for backpacking. It will be an advert encouraging you to donate your eggs 🔎 gwynethrees reports

Yet in the past five years – and increasingly since the pandemic – women aged 18 to 30 with no link to the IVF process are being increasingly targeted – primarily through social media advertising that appeals to their emotions. Clare Ettinghausen, director of strategy and corporate affairs at the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority , says: “Most years, there are between 1,400 and 1,500 egg donors in the UK., aged 31-plus.

In 2020, the average age of its donors was 26.6 years, while in 2022, it was 24.3. Prior to this it was over 30. . Often, they might know someone who is infertile and want to help, and the adverts speak to the altruistic side of other women.”Since 2009, the number of babies born in Britain from donated eggs via IVF cycles has doubled, with the number of births from donor eggs now being 1,300 a year.

This would, in theory, save the young woman thousands of pounds – the average cost of collecting and then freezing a woman’s eggs is £3,350. Yet it is also another example of how young women – who might otherwise have no interest in egg donating – are being targeted. In the UK, payment for egg donation is illegal – donors instead receive £750 compensation, which does not seem to be adequate compensation for what can be a gruelling process. Yet these clinics are now becoming very profitable – using slick PR companies to boost their revenue through targeting potential egg donors – and young women seemingly happy to give them.
