The director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency has predicted that damages from Hurricane Ian will be"catastrophic" and thousands of people could be displaced long-term."But I can tell you that it is going to be catastrophic." President Biden has declared a major disaster in Florida, the White House has announced.
The White House said federal funding is also available to state, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private non-profit organisations.The National Hurricane Centre has issued this colourful picture of the latest rainfall forecast, after Hurricane Ian was downgraded to a tropical storm. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office says it has"not stopped working to triage calls" following the arrival of Hurricane Ian.
However, it is warning that the danger of a"life-threatening storm surge" will continue"through Friday" along the coasts of northeast Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
