A retired accountant who stabbed his wife to death with a kitchen knife as she lay in bed has been jailed for 20 years.
David Maggs, 71, carried out the ‘appallingly cruel’ attack on Linda Maggs at their home in Pontypool on February 6, 2021.Maggs had become ‘obsessed’ with the idea that his 74-year-old wife was getting more money from the split than him.Michael Jones QC, prosecuting, told the court that he had taken two red kitchen knives upstairs to his wife’s bedroom just after 9am.
The pair had spoken briefly about the financial aspects of their divorce when Maggs launched his attack. She tried to steal two houses from me, two houses.’
When taken to Ystrad Mynach police station, in Caerphilly, he told detectives: ‘Thirty years I’ve been married to her and she doesn’t know how to keep her mouth shut, so I topped her.’ Maggs claimed to have ‘blanked out’ during the attack and denied murder on grounds of diminished responsibility.The son of Linda, Andrew Minahan, said his family had been ‘ripped apart’ by her murder.
