It broke my heart a little, because for so long across my mid to late 20s, I had idealised being a core member of a large friendship group. After a relationship breakup, I felt I lost out on being a part of a whole unit. And I desperately wanted a solid, coherent group of people with whom I shared commonalities: political views ; a bit creative ; kind; a bit bold; and from everywhere and nowhere.
At school, there was the fizzing feeling that the wee boy with a round mouth and sunshine skin gave me in reception class, a feeling which made me draw hearts around his head. There was the latent anger I felt towards a mousy brown-haired girl with a know-it-all attitude, spiked with I-know-you-too-well warmth. The comfortableness I sank into with the girl who kept Barbies on a shelf, ready for us to play with.
