🗣️ 'I buy 250 Christmas presents for strangers because I know what it's like to be forgotten' Polly Arrowsmith spends arounds £2,000 on presents for the elderly, women in refuges and homeless people - and she likes to bag a bargain.
“When I was seven, my mum was in a hospital after a major car crash, and my sister and I went to stay with family friends and their kids had a huge pile of presents under the tree and we just got a box of chocolates, which the dog ate.And so for the last 12 years, the 55-year-old has set about making sure 250 people don’t feel that way. She drops off the gifts at local groups: a church that holds a festive lunch for the elderly, a women’s refuge and a homeless charity.
“You get great deals on their sales in January: they are popular, and the site usually crashes and starts early in the morning, think 4-5am. I put things in my basket beforehand to stand any chance. Poly used to aim to buy 1,000 presents some years but says it became too much. “it was diffiuclt logistically. Doing 250 is more managable.”
