I had to flee my home in the middle of the night for reporting the case of Ellie Williams

At 10pm on a Sunday night in May 2020 I got the call I had been dreading. My daughter and I were no longer safe in Cumbria.

Over the course of the previous three days I had been subjected to countless death and rape threats after reporting, legitimately, on the Ellie Williams case. I was told that I didn't deserve to be a mother. So that was it, the life that I had built in Barrow had disappeared in under a week. But, as this was at the height of the first Covid lockdown, my options were limited.

It was shared more than 100,000 times and sparked demonstrations. Former English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson visited the town to, in his words, 'investigate' the claims. To think that something so shocking could happen on our doorstep was truly terrifying and the public, justifiably, reacted in horror.

And then all hell broke loose. During a conversation with a detective at Cumbria CID, I was advised that Ellie was set to be charged with several counts of perverting the course of justice. And when she was, and we duly reported it, I was made a scapegoat. A section of society, mostly fuelled by far-right extremism and racism, accused me of being "in cahoots" with not only the "corrupt police" but also "Asian grooming gangs".

But when The Guardian's Helen Pidd reported on my exile, things began to change. Although a minority had targeted me the majority of the public began to see what was really happening. And the support I received was overwhelming.
