The issue of staff shortages isn’t new, but it is getting much worse.
Every day, I’m juggling our stretched resources with trying to provide safe care for patients. In my 30 years in the nursing industry, I have never seen the staffing levels so grim. Staff are so stressed and burnt out that they’re leaving the profession. Those who can retire early are going, and many nurses are looking for work outside of the NHS. When experienced staff leave, it has a knock-on effect on the newly qualified nurses, who might not have enough support.
The situation right now is heartbreaking. Some staff are broken. I’ve had days where I’ve come on a shift in the morning and found nurses crying because it’s so chaotic. Staff are trying to juggle all these tasks and give everybody the best care. One of my nurses, who’d only been qualified for six months, came to me because she was finding the staffing levels so stressful. She said to me: “I’ve worked hard to get my nursing degree and this is a job that I love.
