, is it? Vaginal tightness is linked to a woman’s sexual morality and by extension, her worth. Tightness is associated with youth, virginity, and sexual purity. It shouldn’t be, but it is. And it sucks. I’ve lost count of how many morons I’ve seen spouting off online about how a woman who has had multiple lovers will inevitably have a loose vagina.
Did I manage to train my vulva to the standard of an Olympic athlete? No. I got repeated bouts of cystitis and pelvic pain. In my quest to transform my vulva into a glistening ball of muscle, I had actually hurt myself. It took several rounds with a urology specialist before we finally worked out what was causing me so much discomfort. I had over-sprung my pelvic floor and made it so tense that it couldn’t work properly. I had no idea that this was even possible.
“Pelvic floor physiotherapy aims to improve function,” she explains. “To achieve this, we need to work on multiple things and not just strength. If you think about tightness as a general concept, there is no area in the body that benefits from being tight. The same applies to the pelvic floor. To improve sexual function, we need to have a pelvic floor that can squeeze, hold, work quickly and most importantly relax and lengthen.
