Like many people present, I think of the monarchy as conceptually unjust but immovably here; an institution that is cruel to the Royals themselves, but a convenient locus of pride, meaning and small talk for everyone else ✒️ tomough Coronation
and foreigners. Nobody alive could explain how each element of this ceremony became enfolded into its tradition. And so what? To misquote a sampling by those well-known throne-watchers, Jay Z and Kanye West: “Nobody knows what it means, but it’s evocative. It gets the people going!”
There had been debate this week about the oath of allegiance. The Archbishop of Canterbury, in his capacity as the event’s emcee, was to say: “I call upon all persons of goodwill in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other realms and the territories to make their homage, in heart and voice, to their undoubted King, defender of all.”
The anti-monarchist campaign group Republic called the idea “nonsense” and “offensive”; the broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby said that the King, to whom he is a close friend, would find the idea of homage-payment “abhorrent”. Lambeth Palace, clarifying, stated that the homage “was always an invitation rather than expectation,” and said that the wording would be altered to make this clear.
The more people I chatted to, the clearer it became to me that the campaign group that had called the oath offensive had misunderstood things. Here in the park, most people felt themselves to be viewing history: partly outside the event rather than wholly within it. Oaths demand to be taken seriously and literally, but this homage was being thought of as serious, yes, but not quite literal.
