I’d tripped as I stepped onto the train and fallen flat on my face. I wasn’t wearing high heels or rushing. But, as the Elvis Costello song goes, accidents will happen.We take so much for granted and then, in an instant, certainties vanish and you become a person you barely recognise. I’m still outraged that most of my fellow travellers had shown such lack of concern. Did they just not care? Did they conclude I was trash because I was wearing an old, garish, orange jacket? Were they frightened of me? Did they think I was a drug addict or an alcoholic or just a pathetic oldie? These questions still trouble me.I have lived in this glorious, frantically busy, energetic metropolis for 50 years. There have been some testing, at times terrifying experiences.
