'I live in UK’s ‘best’ beach town but it’s a dirty mess thanks to littering tourists – Londoners are the worst'
Caitlin says that while tourists are essential for the survival of Margate, between the months of May and September they go from welcome visitors to inconsiderate litterers.“Not one of them puts their rubbish in the bin, to them the beach is the bin.“I’ve come across camping chairs, picnic baskets, tents - there’s nothing I haven’t seen.
“We rely heavily on local litter pickers to clear the sand, but it’s a huge job and certainly not one that should fall on us.But even once Caitlin has escaped the mess of the beach, she says that the growing number of Airbnbs in Margate is causing her sleepless nights - quite literally.“I live in the old town just on the outskirts and there are loads of Airbnb properties up there filled with party-goers.It’s not just the noise of the Airbnb guests that concerns Caitlin, however.
“There’s currently a housing crisis in Margate and there’s a lot of anger towards people buying up houses and prices locals out.
