This week’s fight for university places through clearing will be fierce, according to the head of the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service . Clare Marchant has said “highly selective courses” would “go quite quickly” and that at “highly selective courses at highly selective institutions, it’s likely to be more competitive than it was last year.”
In 2022, 34,875 18-year-olds secured a university place through Ucas clearing, a late application round for students for anybody who missed out on their first choice spot, while also giving universities the chance to fill spaces they still have left on their courses. Clearing is also used by students who achieved higher grades than they expected, or who have changed their minds about studying.
Emma Harkins, 24, from Stockton-on-Tees, went through Ucas clearing in 2017. She tells i her experience., but then when I saw everyone around me getting ready to go, I changed my mind. Maybe I’d be missing out by not going, maybe I’d be ruining my life? That’s the sense I got, that I’d have no progression in life without it. People around me kept telling me I needed to be really quick, and to act fast to get a place.
So I looked through the Ucas clearing options online, and it had a few choices that I had the right grades for. I knew my best friend was going to Sunderland University so I had a look at what they had there. One of the course places available was “childhood studies and media” so I went for it. In my panic I thought that going to university and doing anything, whether I was interested in it or not, was better than not going at all.
