A businessman has told of the moment Sudanese rebels seized his Khartoum hotel, forcing him and other guests to spend a week trapped upstairs This was the view from Nicolas Forgeard-Grignon's hotel where he hid with limited food and water

jets – old Soviet planes that the Sudanese army have – tried to destroy rebel positions while the rebels shot back at the planes.

“We are used to working in challenging environments, but not dangerous ones,” Mr Forgeard-Grignon, who had been running a farming project in Sudan. “The hotel staff left on the second day, but the owner said we could do what we wanted while we were there. So we collected food, we rationed food, we built up stocks that we hid just in case our main stocks were taken. And the tap water was not drinkable, so we had to filter the water and boil it.

Mr Forgeard-Grignon said it appeared as though rival factions in Sudan’s civil war were waiting for all civilians, including foreigners, to leave the capital before waging an all-out assault on one another.
