'I smelt my husband’s Parkinson’s disease 12 years before his diagnosis' 🔵 When Joy Milne first noticed a different smell on her husband she had no idea it was Parkinson's disease that he would be diagnosed with over a decade later

that she and both her sisters inherited from their grandmother. It has forced her to avoid perfume shops and aisles of meat as she hates the smell and often shops early in the morning or late at night. “I have to avoid walking past people in the street and I have to wear a mask now,” she says.

After solidifying her findings by attending another patient group with her husband, the couple approached Professor Tilo Kunath at the University of Edinburgh to propose research based on the discovery. As a nurse and doctor, the Milne couple were aware of the importance of what Joy had smelt and they hoped toAs part of their early work with Professor Kunath, Joy was given T-shirts to smell that had been worn by people with and without Parkinson’s.

The couple met when they were 16 years old and had three sons together. “We had our differences along the way but we stayed together,” Joy recalls, “I know an awful lot about Parkinson’s because of him so it’s good to be able to do the research to help people.
