'The cold water helps to calm and soothe me, on both good and bad days'
. They are meant to act as an emergency relief valve to stop sewage backing up into our homes and legislation states they should only be used in circumstances of “exceptionally heavy rainfall”. But last year my main local swim spot, Gyllyngvase Beach, had 70 sewage alerts and has had 10 so far this year, according toOften, I can see the sewage in the water – there’ll be a grey slick amongst the blue – or I might smell it before I see it. But sometimes it isn’t visible.
I’ve been sick a couple of time after swimming in the sea, which I believe was due to sewage. Now, I often will need to drive further afield to find a swim spot I deem to be “safer” from sewage. Others might choose to risk it. I’ve heard other swimmers say, “just keep your head out [of the water] and your mouth shut”. That doesn’t seem like a reliable way of preventing exposure to sewage.to help us make more informed decisions about sewage risk on a day-to-day basis. The app, however, doesn’t cover every swim spot in my local area – there are thousands in Cornwall alone.
I know I’m lucky to live in one of the UK’s most popular places for a holiday. I often use my time off to enjoy the county. I also know the risks of swimming along its coastline. That won’t be true, however, for all the tourists who visit the area – around four to five million come to Cornwall each year.
