‘I walked across one of Iraq’s deadly minefields - this is the very important reason why’

In the sloping mountains of the Amedi district of Iraqi Kurdistan, you could be forgiven for thinking you had stumbled upon heaven on earth.

MAG has been working in Iraq since 1992, but in one of the most highly contaminated places on earth, there are still decades to go before the country is completely safe. The winding path is marked out by red and white sticks, dictating safe and unsafe ground. As I begin two deminers stop to say hello on their way down. While pulling their helmets off, they tell me they successfully deactivated a mine this morning - the third on this site since work began in April.

Even with the wooden markers guiding me as I climb, I can’t help but feel paranoid about every step I take. Could there be a landmine lying in wait on my next step, or the one after? In the future, residents of the nearby village said they want to use the land to graze their animals, and maybe even build a hotel to attract tourists. But for now, the hill is a no-go area, except for the helmeted figures of deminers, carefully moving upwards.Millions of people live with the reality that one wrong step could kill them.

Since 1989, MAG has helped over 20 million people in 70 countries. Their mission is simple - do whatever it takes to get to a landmine before another child does.
