'I was sexually abused. Police told me not to get therapy if I wanted justice' 🔴 One woman said she was ‘advised that getting therapy would complicate the trial and the notes could be used against her’
Without pre-trial therapy, she said her mental health severely deteriorated during the 18-month run up to the trial, resulting in her withdrawing from the process and her alleged abuser walking free.
Speaking on the strict condition of anonymity, the woman said she reported a family member to police for child sexual abuse. Although the woman did not take part in pre-trial therapy, notes of therapy sessions from four years earlier, in which she discussed the abuse she faced, were requested by police.
“Also, at the time of those therapy sessions, I was not shown the notes by the therapist so had not been able to attest to whether or not I felt they were a fair summary of the session as this is not a routine part of therapy. The notes were the therapist’s thoughts and interpretations of the sessions rather than factual.
