ECHO jury columnist David Shams describes his experience of watching Liverpool vs Everton in the heart of China

“When I was younger, I saw a highlight reel of Steven Gerrard and said, ‘Wow, this is the team I have to cheer for,'” Frank told me after I asked him about becoming a Liverpool fan. I had to laugh, though, because apparently, he watched that video at the end of the 2014-15 season.

Finding NoLie Taproom wasn’t necessarily hard. But when I was dropped off and didn’t immediately see the bar, I did have a tiny bit of panic. Once I pulled up a map on my phone, I realised I would have to walk through an alleyway to reach it. Along the way, however, I passed a darkened lot with a flurry of activity. Three-wheeled scooters with extended pickup beds were zipping in and out of the entrance. They dropped off loads of cardboard and other recyclables, then left to pick up more.

According to the bartender, a Dortmund fan, the bar is over a year old. This makes sense, considering the buildings around the restaurant give the impression of being recently constructed. I came across this place because one of the first things I did after my family and I arrived in Bejing was search for the local OLSC. I knew there was one. I had seen it on Liverpool’s website. But the only way to contact them was through their WeChat profile.

Frank joined me shortly after that. We were sitting at a long but narrow high top table. A second fan joined as kick-off loomed, gesturing with his hands to see if the seats around us were free. It was the first time I’ve watched a match in Mandarin. This wasn’t necessarily odd, but the commentary team wasn’t at the ground. They were instead in a studio, so the sound of the crowd seemed more in the background than as something embedded in the coverage.

The derby came and went. Liverpool found two goals in the second half to get all three points. It helped being up a man and having a bit of good fortune with Konate not getting a second booking. But Ashley Young’s two yellows were correct, the penalty for handball on Michael Keane was right, too, and that final goal on the counter was brilliant to watch. Darwin Nunez carried the ball forward confidently and slotted it to Salah, who coolly finished.
