After losing his grandmother in 2020, Ashley Dee struggled with grief and relied on an unhealthy lifestyle of drinking and smoking.knew he needed to make a change and has since worked hard to transform his lifestyle, losing seven stone in the process and is now preparing for his first ever marathon. Ashley is set to take on the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon to raise funds for the hospice that cared for Anne Wilson who sadly died after a battle with cancer.
He said: “The doctors gave her six months to live, and it felt like someone had torn a hole in my heart. During that time, alongside my family, the roles were reversed, and I had to care for her in the way she had always done for me – it was something I never thought I would have to do.”In her final weeks, Anne received expert end-of-life care and support from Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley.
After her death, Ashley struggled to cope with his grief. He said: “I was in a really bad place. My OCD was out of control, my depression was at an all-time high. I just spent days just lying on the sofa and I wasn’t dealing with it. Eventually, after suggestions from friends and family, I decided to get out and start walking and I just noticed the weight falling off me.
Now Ashley hopes he can inspire others to make positive changes in their lives, especially if they are dealing with the loss of a loved one.
