Tony Bennett, the eminent stylist of American musical standards and the last of the great saloon singers, has died aged 96. Publicist Sylvia Weiner confirmed Bennett’s death to The Associated Press, saying he died in his hometown of New York.Tony Bennett was an American singer of traditional pop standards, jazz, and show tunes. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
. He had collaborated with various artists and musicians throughout his career and had won multiple Grammy Awards for his contributions to the music industry. In addition to his musical achievements, Tony Bennett was also known for his longevity in the industry, as he continued to perform and record well into his later years. He had been an influential figure in the world of music and had left a lasting legacy in the American music scene.
The last of the great saloon singers of the mid-20th century, Bennett often said his lifelong ambition was to create “a hit catalogue rather than hit records”. He released more than 70 albums, bringing him 19 competitive Grammys, all but two after he reached his 60s, and enjoyed deep and lasting affection from fans and fellow artists.
