Taj Ali: ‘The NHS is in the midst of a recruitment and retention crisis, with dangerously low staffing across the board’
The current strike wave, the largest in three decades, hasn’t come out of nowhere – it’s been over a decade in the making. And it’s about more than just pitiful pay.And those staffing them are on the brink as well. The NHS is not at breaking point; it is already broken. Over 7 million people were waiting to start routine treatment at the end of October, a record-high hospital waiting list totalling more than Denmark’s entire population, with just 68.9 per cent of patients in England seen within four hours at A&E. For context, in 2009, just 4 per cent of patients waited over four hours in A&E.
