The whole ceremony of Charles' accession looked surreal as ancient traditions were carried out by a military division more than 300 years old to the sound of medieval-sounding trumpets.
There are several clear differences in the photos, but they point to how life has changed over the years rather than any visual shifts in the monarchy or its traditions.
Aerial views of people packed shoulder-to-shoulder behind secured barriers show them all with their arms raised, craning to capture the ceremony. People watching the Queen’s proclamation were dressed quite formally, in full suits, dresses and coats – as this was what was in fashion during the 1950s.Some had clearly made more of a traditional effort, wearing floral dresses and button-up shirts while several even showed up in full suits.
Today also saw salutes fired from Gibraltar, Cardiff Castle, Edinburgh Castle, Colchester, York, Larkhill near Stonehenge, naval bases in Devonport and Portsmouth and a number of stations at sea.
