Israeli forces fired rubber bullets and stun grenades as worshippers barricaded themselves inside the mosque KieronMonks reports
Dr Imam Mustafa Abu Sway, a senior Islamic scholar based at Al-Aqsa Mosque, described an “assault” on worshippers that violated historic precedent.. “This is an assault on the sanctity of the mosque, an assault on the month of Ramadan, and an assault on Muslim worshippers in a state of spiritual retreat.”
“The historical status quo is simple: the police of Israel as an occupying force should be outside the parameters of Al-Aqsa Mosque. All 36 acres . They should never be inside and this has been the case since 1967.”“Shocked to awake to the disturbing scenes of Israeli Security forces’ raid on the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem injuring many worshippers during Ramadan,” he tweeted on Wednesday morning.
“Violence only fuels more violence. The sanctity and status of the Holy sites must be respected and protected.”Palestinians in Jerusalem said the violence was a result of Israel attempting to impose a “new reality” on the site that is holy to both Muslims and Jews.Jews know the site as the Temple Mount, the location of two biblical temples that were destroyed there, and consider it the holiest in their faith.
All faiths are allowed to visit the compound in occupied East Jerusalem, but only Muslim worshippers are allowed to pray there under the current status quo. But a radical movement of Israeli Jews is seeking to reclaim the site as a Jewish space of worship. Visits from settlements that are illegal under international law have become increasingly frequent, in some cases performing religious rituals.
