Funding from the Imperial War Museum is to support new artwork exploring the conflict and connections that exist between Preston and Egypt at the Harris museum 🇪🇬
The grant award of £20,000 from the 14-18 Now Legacy Fund – a national programme of 22 fully-funded, artist commissions that aims to re-invest in the arts and heritage sector – has been approved following the Council’s application in 2022.emerged from an integral 20th century artwork known as the Egyptian Balcony that resides in the heart of the Harris.
In 1908 the arts museum commissioned artist John Somerscales to travel to Egypt to prepare sketches for a series of murals.Since 1913 the country’s cultural notions have played a significant role in the museum’s history. The Harris is now looking to commission an artist of Egyptian heritage to work on the piece that will be displayed on the second-floor balcony, and use the Harris’ unique collections to draw out stories relevant to young people, local people and family audiences today.
The Council will work with community partners as co-producers on this commission such as recent participants of the African Caribbean Working Group,
