Focused on the life of Otto Frank’s secretary, Miep Gies, who played a key role in helping the Frank family hide, ‘A Small Light’ proves there are ways to illuminate this story anew.
The swings from horror to humour make you feel the movement that much more sharply. And as the show settles into itself, it’s even more fascinating viewing for the way in which it merges the exhilarating subterfuge required to dodge the occupiers with the small victories that result from these endeavours.
It’s safe to say that overall, the show wouldn’t work without Powley at its centre. There’s a silent-movie-star expressiveness to her face even when she’s speaking in her loudest London twang. She conveys exasperation and determination in equal measure and sometimes simultaneously. As the show progresses, the power dynamic between her and Otto Frank shifts: they are no longer employer and employee but rather partners in a terrible and essential deception.
