Lauren Elkin focuses her study on women artists who have put the body at the centre of their practice, who create a language that rejects more phallocentric discussion, in ‘Art Monsters’ 🖋️ FlorenceHallett

Bad things happen when a woman devotes herself to art. She is not just an art monster, she’s monstrous – someone who is childless, or neglects her children.Dept. of Speculation

Once she began work on the book, Elkin realised that it’s not just family life that limits female creativity, there’s something else too, that has its roots in the social conditioning of women from birth.

Her text is interwoven with the words and images of women from Woolf to her painter sister Vanessa Bell, historian Marina Warner to sculptor Helen Chadwick. She uses the same notebook style she deployed in her previous books Flâneuse: Women Walk the City, and No.91/92: Notes on a Parisian Commute.

The book is not entirely unproblematic. Elkin’s emphasis on the social conditioning of women from birth, and the female body as the authentic agent of female experience, seems at odds with her view that an evolving understanding of what it is to be in a female body could lead to “the ultimate demise of the gender binary.”
