IN 2020, Grace Jones became the first black woman to be given the role of programming London’s Meltdown, theIt belatedly took place this month after being postponed twice due to the pandemic.
With the exception of British guitar player, Barry Reynolds – a veteran of Island records’ Compass Point All Stars, which also featured legendary rhythm section Sly and Robbie, and was central to Jones’s signature sound back in the day – the band, including her son, Paulo Goude, were relatively young.
The sound quality was in fact inferior to that I’d experienced at the Stereophonics and Tom Jones concert held at Cardiff’s Principality Rugby Stadium on the previous evening. A consummate actress, Jones’s stage-show is tightly choreographed but her unpredictability adds frisson, keeping the audience, band and long-suffering stage hands on their toes. Aspects of live entertainment that other singers seek to conceal are incorporated into the performance.
“Demolition Man” was an early highlight, Jones attacking a drum set with gleeful abandon before showing a more sensual side with “My Jamaican Guy”, performed in little more than a bikini and a Jamaican flag wrapped round her head.
