From the 1820s, the Industrial Revolution was in full swing in Scotland, linked to a dramatic increase in population. There were perhaps a million people in Scotland at the beginning of the 18th century, with Glasgow becoming one of the largest cities in the world.

The economy took off, and industrialised rapidly, with its large stock of easily mined coal, the country diversified into engineering, shipbuilding, and locomotive construction. From the Queen Mary getting built on the famous banks of the Clyde to Balmoral Castle in Aberdeen, we take a look back at all our favourite aerial pictures.
