India is aiming to become the first country to land on the Moon's never-before-explored south pole, after a Russian mission ended in a humiliating crash-landing on Sunday
The countries had been in a race to explore the region, which is believed to contain water ice that could supply fuel, oxygen and water, and potentially support a future settlement on the Moon., which means “Moon vehicle” in Hindi and Sanskrit, is expected to touch down on the lunar surface on Wednesday. Its robotic lander, Vikram, is due to land a few hundred miles from Russia’s intended landing site on the south pole.
The ISRO said: “Chandrayaan-3 is set to land on the Moon on 23 August, around 6.04pm Indian Standard Time . [1.34pm BST] Thanks for the wishes and positivity!”
