Paul Smith 'saw red'
An inmate put a prison officer in a headlock and began to squeeze, leaving her struggling to breathe and feeling light-headed, a court heard. The incident at HMP Whatton, a Category C men's prison, located in the village of Whatton, near Bingham, may have only lasted three seconds, but left the prison officer with bad anxiety.
His colleague, who was on duty in the health care area, appeared, pressed an alarm and took hold of Smith by his arm. But Smith swung his arms around, put her in the headlock and squeezed as he held her.Colleagues intervened, and Smith, 45, whose current address is HMP Whatton, was taken to the floor. Katrina Wilson, prosecuting, told the court Smith had described "seeing red" and apologised to the officers. His victim had a cut on her chin, a sore neck and reness.
Luc Chignell, mitigating, said Smith had undergone constructive therapy sessions in HMP Whatton. He served the custodial element of a previous sentence and was released for about 22 months.
