After the year Michigan's Olu Oluwatimi has had, filled with tragedy and heartbreak, no one will question his strength. 'I'm blessed, and I’m grateful.'
’s offensive line win another Joe Moore Award and be the final piece Michigan needed to take a run at a national championship. The two brothers have a lot in common. Both go by Olu, though Oluwaseun also goes by Seun to avoid confusion. Both played college football, Seun at Maryland and Olu at Air Force, Virginia and now Michigan.
Oluwatimi grew up as the youngest of six children. His parents, Yetunde and Olufemi, met in the United States after emigrating from Nigeria and settling in the Washington, D.C., area. His father drove a taxi before going to school to become a registered nurse, and his mother works with children on the autism spectrum. Football wasn’t a big part of their family culture, but hard work definitely was.
“Week in and week out, I was trying to get feedback from different agents that are talking to me, and also my position coach, what he’s hearing,” Oluwatimi said. “I kind of let that weigh on me a lot, too, which was kind of unhealthy. It was pretty frustrating.”Playing at Michigan, a program that uses more NFL-style blocking schemes, was a way for Oluwatimi to demonstrate his abilities.
Oluwatimi’s father had a similar procedure in 2008 to remove a growth in his brain and underwent major heart surgery last year. The family had known for a while that another brain surgery was needed but avoided telling Olu to not weigh him down during the season. The prognosis was good, but Oluwatimi still had a lot on his mind when he suited up that weekend.
More details emerged later that morning. Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a former walk-on, was accused of opening fire on a bus as students returned from attending a play as part of a class trip. UVa players Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry and Devin Chandler were killed. Two other students were injured, including UVa running backOluwatimi played with Davis and Perry and met Chandler, a transfer from Wisconsin, on a recruiting visit. Even 600 miles away, the shooting hit close to home.
