Star athletes trickle in and out of EXOS' facilities. The business EXOS is most known for in NFL circles is not “normal” to the layperson, writes JourdanRodrigue — where science meets football with the fortunes of draft prospects on the line:
hopefuls or the facility support staff blink. At the table next to where Beckham is seated, two data analysts even start up a game of ping-pong. All of this is normal!
The thing is, everybody is training for the exact same series of challenges: the 40, the vertical jump, the three-cone drill and so on. Some drills vary as athletes get into more specialized pro days. Fractions of seconds and centimeters can mean career placement advantages over another player who is studying for an identical test.
“If an ankle dorsiflexes on the right side to 30 degrees, and on the left side to 33 degrees … we’ve got a variance in there and we want to understand ,” said Brent Callaway, EXOS’ vice president of performance.
Asymmetries can be vocational, and so fairly straightforward to correct if needed. Maybe a quarterback in a pass-heavy college offense needs to build a little more functional strength in his non-throwing arm. Maybe a left tackle who has a higher number of pass sets has a higher-than-normal strength or flexibility imbalance between his left and right legs.
That player may get more work from coaches and physical therapists on exercises that increase hip and joint fluidity, and add more strength and control in deceleration. Weeks of those drills could turn into hundredths and then tenths of seconds in speed improvement in the eventual testing the prospects do in front of NFL teams. Each player goes through the same intake and testing process, after which their unique training plan is built.
