The number of troops who marched in a lightning move on Moscow could have been much lower than the 25,000 claimed by Yevgeny Prigozhin but left Moscow and the Kremlin reeling 🔎 Analysis by DavidParsley50
It turned into open revolt after Russia’s Defence Ministry announced it intended to bring Prigozhin’s forces under Kremlin command by 1 July.
On Friday evening Prigozhin posted his intentions on social media. He told Russians the justification for the war was a lie and merely an excuse for “a small group of scumbags” to promote themselves and deceive the public and Putin. Before the world could even comprehend what Prigozhin was saying – effectively announcing a military coup – unverified video began to emerge of his, a city with a population 1.1 million and 85 miles from the Ukrainian border.
The warlord also claimed not a drop of blood had been spilt, but there is reliable evidence pointing to at least one Russian military helicopter being shot down by his forces. Unverified reports on social media suggest the Russians lost up to 39 pilots and crew to Wagner forces. Until this point he had only made sarcastic references to Putin as the “happy grandfather” and had questioned how Russia could win it war in Ukraine if “this grandfather is a complete arsehole”.Another city put under, more or less, martial law was Voronezh, halfway along the M4 motorway between Rostov and the Kremlin.
“The forces heading to Moscow were certainly not 25,000 but rather maybe a few thousand in separate convoys, albeit with heavy armoured vehicles on low loaders, air defence that shot down several Russian aircraft and engaged others, fuel tankers, and trucks with ammunition. Quite what the deal consists of remains unknown, although Prigozhin is said to have agreed to leave Russia for Belarus in exchange for the charges against him and his troops being dropped.
