Bricklayer Bernard Smith built his own pub in his back garden and created a lifetime of memories
Bernard Smith was a family man, a country and western fan, 'a bricky who liked a drink' and an avid collector.
It was like one man's personal flea market or a bespoke Empire Exchange, where none of the stuff was for sale. The garage was Bernard's den, somewhere distinctly and uniquely his. But it was also a place to be shared with family and friends. Then, to a soundtrack of Hank Williams, Boxcar Willie, Johnny Cash and, Bernard's personal favourite, Charley Pride, drinks would be poured and the party would start. "He came from an Irish background and loved Irish pubs with the snugs and little rooms," said Fiona, a community arts worker.
